Interstate

Desired
by politicians, city leaders and citizens alike for decades, the Interstate
Highway System finally came to Alexandria, establishing rapid transit
north and south. The politicians involved during the design of the highway
insisted on a downtown route. The impact, and scars, on the right-of-ways
are evident, as are the lost buildings and neighborhoods. The expected
development hasn't occurred yet, but the highway provides a valuable infrastructure
on which the Alexandria of the future can be built.
