The Alexandria City Park has served the city for decades, and most of us remember it well, and have many fond memories of its facilities.
The Rock Garden was a great place for hikes, and bike rides. The City Zoo even in the 1950s was well done, and a place to get scared, watching the alligator moat! Today, the Alexandria Zoo has evolved into a highly respected facility with widespread civic support.
The golf course has been a favorite for locals for years...convenient, inexpensive, and a great little facility. It has been carefully restored and reopened to the public in the spring of 2010.
How many trips did we take to the Natatorium on our bikes during the 1950s? Hundreds, thousands? It was such an accomplishment to be able to swim the huge pool and prove to the lifeguards that you were worthy of swimming in the "deep end", and going off its huge towering diving board.
Bringhurst Field, the home of the Alexandria Aces, has special memories also: like driving by the back gate with my family in 1955 on hot summer nights and asking the ticket taker what the score was. Today, the addition of several Little League parks makes the entire area a real sports center.
There are so many more pleasant memories of the City Park: Thunderstreak Park and the miniature planes flown there, the tall wooden slide (and splinters), Garfish Rodeos at the auditorium, Kiddieland and more! |
