As Baton Rouge grew from its traditional boundaries, streets like Florida and Airline Highway (what a great art-deco, streamline name!) became the connections to the newer parts of town that supported outward growth. Airline was the Interstate of the time, even with cloverleaf interchanges, and it became the destination where many travelers stayed, and the expansion of motels occurred. U.S. Highway 61 stretches from Minnesota southward along the Mississippi River for much of its route, through Baton Rouge to its final destination in New Orleans. Known in many areas and states as the "Great River Road", it serves as a major North-South artery over its 1,400 miles.
East-West travelers to Baton Rouge often arrived on U.S. Highway 190, currently a 875 mile route from Slidell, Louisiana to Pecos County Texas. Shown below are some representative historic postcards of earlier Baton Rouge hotels, motor courts and motels, many of which were located on US61 or US190.
