Gone but not forgotten. To borrow from Bob Hope, "Thanks for the memories." I even found names of some of my contemporaries in your Register. I remember well the Parkway Inn and Lazarone's. I was a member of BHS class of '53.

I appreciate the work you put into this site. I was born in alexandria, and lived there on and off throughout my life. I do have some pleasent memories of the past. My grandparent lived on Rapides avenue. My cousins and I used to play along side the bayou till late at night. 'hide and seek' and 'murder in the dark' were favorites. I cannot imagine letting my own child do that now. again, thanks for all the hard work.

What fun! Seeing the photographs brought back some of my favorite memories of growing up in Alexandria - the Don theater, shopping downtown - loved the old pix of Wellan's, Bolton homecoming parades downtown (BHS class of 1972 - Go Bears!), selling Noah's potato chips for Y-Teens, and the list goes on. Now when I go home to visit, I'll think a little more about the past. Thanks for all your hard work in putting this site together.

Was stationed at Alexandria AFB from 1954 to 1959 as a young Air Force Lieutenant (pilot). 366th Fighter group commanded by Col. Bill Daniels. Met my wife at the bowling alley and have been married for 47 years. She's still as georgeous as the day I first laid eyes on her. Typical of those southern belles. We bought our first home on Jackson street and our first child was born in Alex. Attended an AF reunion at the base in 1989. The base remained little unchanged but the downtown area had really deteriorated from what I remembered. Enjoyed the pics. Brought back a lot of fond memories.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Alexandria Retrospective. I grew up in Alex. Left for college in 1974 and have not lived there since. My father was transferred in 1978. I miss Alex a lot and continue to visit every chance I get. Looking forward to my 30 year Bolton high school reunion!!!!

Being a teenager in Alex during the 50's was the greatest: no drugs, no crime, and the start of Rock and Roll. I was the drummer in The Two Tones, along with Clifford Forrester (lead singer), Lloyd Edwards (sax & keyboard), Butch Crenshaw (vocal & bass), and Alvin Ross (vocal & guitar). We had a lot of fun and I often think of Alvin, along with Jack Luttrell. Both died in a tragic accident one night. The teachers at Bolton (class of '58) were great. Years later, I had a chance to personally thank Mr. Fitzgerald (physics teacher, WWII pilot & aviation club sponsor) for his inspiration. I went on to become an Air Force pilot during the 60's, flew missions in Viet Nam, and retired as an American Airlines Captain.

Other memories: victory garden behind our house on Oxford St., watching planes out at the air base, riding my bike on my Town Talk paper route (still ride a bike), hanging out at Lazarones, Vic Wilder's T-bird, and Stevie Street's birthday (Ground Hog Day)!!

Thanks for keeping the memory alive, Ken. This is a web site that must be visited often to keep up with new messages and old memories.

(P.S. Shirley & I are in Palm Springs during winter and Big Bear Lake in summer.)

I always enjoy looking back on the way life used to be. I was born and reared in Alexandria and have continued to live my adult life here in Alexandria, so I remember most of the photos and scenes of livelihood of Alex. The photograph that impressed me the most was the one of Wellan's, decorated @ Christmas time. Of course, some of my favorites were the Don Theatre, Sears, Rapides Bank (where my dad worked for nearly 30 years!). And a couple of others that were not shown but i'm sure all of you will remember: the extremely narrow Murray Street Bridge and the Paramount Theatre. Thanks for the stroll down memory lane! Great job!

Thanks for the great memories Ken. Very well done. It really makes one homesick and wishful for the "good ole" days. Thank goodness that I was able to experience growing up in a city and community like Alexandria. I ENJOYED YOUR HISTORY OF ALEXANDRIA. YOU MENTIONED MY FATHER, BILL KEARNS AND HIS GAS STATION AND COIN SHOP.THAT WAS EXCITING TO SEE HIS NAME. I MIGHT HAVE SOME PICTURES OF HIS STATION AND I WILL SEND IT TO YOU.

YOU FORGOT TO MENTION THE PARAMOUNT THEATHER DOWNTOWN. I REMEMBER ON SATURDAY MORNING WE COULD GET INTO THE PARAMOUNT WITH 6 RC COLA TOPS. SO WE WOULD GO TO DAD'S GAS STATION AND RAID HIS COKE MACHINE TO GET THE TOPS. WE HAD 11 KIDS IN THE FAMILY SO WE ALL COULDN'T GET THE RC TOPS.

THOSE WERE THE GOOD OLE' DAYS. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE MEMORIES.

Enjoyed the web site and the pictures, especially the old house on Main St., that brought back memories. In 1958 it had four apartments , and I rented my first apartment in this house when I moved out on my own. I graduated from Bolton High in 1959.

Your site was sent to me by an old friend who shares my background from CenLa. Thank you so much for this piece of work. I shared many of the same wonderful memories that you show; of my first movie at the Don, watching those groceries on the conveyor at the Piggly Wiggly, and many hours spent at Sonny's Palace Grocery on Monroe St. ogling his candy offerings and wondering what to spend my nickel on.

What a wonderful labor of love for a place and time that has been too long from my memory.

I enjoyed my growing up years in Alexandria and still get together with several childhood friends each year. I graduated from Bolton in 1956. I have a son and his family who live there now. My husband and I are retired Texas teachers and moved to the mountains of New Mexico to retire. We love the climate and outdoor activities here.

Many thanks for a job well done. Your efforts are sincerely appreciated. Although I lived in Pineville, my Grandparents did live in Alexandria, along with plenty of other relatives. Seeing the old photos really touched my soul. I came away thinking that, "Gee, I wish there was more." Some day, I hope someone will make up a "memory trip" for both sides of the muddy Red River. For now, thanks to you, I will return to your site often, and relish in my joyous memories of CENLA.

Really enjoyed the pictures--we also remember Alexandria during better times (as far as we are concerned). We hate to see all its beautiful old buildings and businesses dissappearing--my children don't know what its like to shop in a dept. store (like Wellan's) and actually have the owner or his wife walk up and wait on you and know your name! When you had a complaint-it actually meant something--when businesses where owned and run by your neighbors and friends--I really miss those days--Alexandria was a truly beautiful (and safe) town to live in.

Got this "site" thru a friend and plan to send it to a lot of friends! i go back a lot further than most-lived in Alexandria all my life--thru the war years when Alexandria was something with all the army camps and air-bases! Finished Bolton High School in 1943 [now that ought to tell you how old i am!] all what i've read from others sure brings back memories! i remember Mockingbird Park on Bolton Ave. i lived on the end of Bolton Ave. and Rapides Ave. Does anyone remember the Railroad Terminal bus? Gosh i could "write"a book of memories! maybe i'll be back with more!!

I was born in Alex in 1948. My dad was Lloyd Bell and worked at the Rapides Bank & Trust Company. I have a brother Brett and two sisters, Pam and Pat. Both of our parents are now gone but we, the kids, have very fond and not so fond memories of our home town. I live now in North Dakota and a physician. My specialty is Psychiatry, and I love it here. We are the SLOWEST growing state in the union, and that is fine with me. Low crime, good people and cold weather. Oh, I went to school at St. Francis Cabrini, Cherokee Elementary, Maryhill Seminary, and ended up at Menard High and grad in 1966. Hope to hear from some of you.

Your Alexandria Retrospective is quite impressive! Its black and white photographs, although seemingly bleak, are just enough to get my memories flowing -- conjuring up images in my mind that are in super-duper Technicolor and extra-wide Vistavision. I was born in Alexandria in 1934 and the pictures steered my mind into all directions -- memories from even before World War II. There is no place on Earth that was a better place in which to grow up. I wish that your wonderful efforts here would spark your collaboration with others who have additional photos to offer and stories to tell for another expanded retrospective. Many, many thanks.

Our daddy, Felix Bell Sr., was a fireman. He shopped for groceries at the Cicardo's grocery store. Our mother did not drive. Daddy would pay the bill monthly and get us a bag of Jax cookies. The four of us gobbled it greedily. My first engagement ring was bought at Schnacks Jewelers. We always went to the Paramount theater in the summer on Wed. We could save our cola bottle caps to get in.

Mrs. Cicardo (I am not sure I have spelled her name right) would get us the bottle caps from their soda machine. A Hershey bar in those days was a nickle. I rode the city bus into town for a nickle. Do you remember the old airplane parked at City Park? My grandmother, Mrs. Sarah Bell, lived on Hebert St. I spent a lot of time with her and would walk to the park to go swimming at the public pool. Most of our pictures have been lost.

Thank you this has been a valuable piece of nostalgia.

Enjoyed the memories. Does anyone remember the fire station on Rapides Avenue, A&P, Dinnat's bakery and the ice house? I was born and raised in Alexandria on 12th Street between Monroe and Madison. Moved to Libuse in 1951. Attended Rosental Grammar and Bolton High (1955). Worked as an office manager at W.T. Grant Co. on Third Street for $50.00 a week until I married and moved away. My mother is from Alexandria as well as her family. Her dad was Arthur Janette. Her Mother was Mabel Bonette. She had several sisters and brothers. Pearly Bonette was Fire Chief during the 40's and 50's. Sam Bonette was a barber in business with Arthur Janette and practiced their trade through the 60's and maybe even to the 70's.

My uncle Jim (James Janette) was the manager of the Singer Sewing Machine Store for a number of years and moved on to work at Sears. Arthur and Mabel had six children; Arthur, James, Dorothy, Bill, Lois and Jerry. Only Arthur and Dorothy are still with us at this time. This trip down memory lane was very interesting as I have not visited Alexandria since 1995. I do remember some of these places. Thanks.

This is great. I work at L.S. Rugg Elementary (the oldest standing Elem. School in the Parish, Bolton High is the oldest High School.) Our neighborhoods have changed a great deal in the Garden District but not our hearts. It is still the prettiest place around.
