Comments: Very nice historical view of your city! Love it! Would love to see such sites for many other cities: clean, easy to navigate, lots of pictures and input from locals.

I am wondering if someone can assist me with some visual research? I'm developing a graphic novel project about Jim Bowie and I'm needing some idea of what Alexandria would have looked like in 1826. Was the town center brick or wooden structures, or mixed? Can someone supply artists renderings of what a main street looked like, or Bailey's Hotel specifically (where Bowie had a room)? Visually, much will be conjecture on my part but I am striving for accuracy where I can. I can also use visual clues for Vidalia and/or the Alexander House and The Sandbar Fight. Write back at this address if you can help.

City: Terrell
State: TX

Comments: I was born in the old Rapides General Hospital in 1956. My Father was stationed at England AFB at that time. We lived there until 1961 when he was transferred to Florida. Have a lot of memories of Alexandris/Pineville area. Have been back several times and it is hard to believe what time has done to the area. It's almost impossible to go to the base and not choke up at how it has changed.

Patricia Chelette

City: Franklin
State: TN

Comments: My husband and I both grew up in Alexandria. He attended Bolton High School and I went to Providence. It was a simpler time then. There are many memories there. I still dream of eating a hamburger as good as the ones we used to get at Reed & Bell or the po-boys at Fuzzy's. I haven't been back to Alexandria in over 10 years. I don't think I would like the changes that have evolved....I prefer to remember the past.

Comments: Am really missing not having the Alexandria Aces in town since I have been watching them off and on since the middle 50's at Bringhurst. I remember when Art Visconte played second base with Bill Lynn in center and with Harry Strohm as the manager. I remember one season when a pitcher named Bob Reizner went 20-0 on the season with the Aces. Then in the 70's one of the Ace's pitchers named Randy Jones went on to win the Cy Young Award with the Padres.

City: Boyce (Cotile Lake)

Comments: I have just been reviewing and enjoying recent entries in your Retrospective web site. Thanks again for the walk down memory lane. Just yesterday I drove in front of Louisiana College and saw all the changes at the entry into LC from Main Street Pineville.

Now we have overpasses and I49 but no more drive in movies, not even the benches my class mates an I sat on at Bolton High's entry site. Who would have thought it would all change so fast. I graduated from Bolton in 1959. Now looking at retirement & Social Security WOW... Where did the time go. I often thank God for the people He put in my life to live and grow older with. This includes many of you. Looking at the memories and making more every day gives me great happiness. We can make life better for our children and grandchildren. Keep looking up for His soon return. Sue (Susie Barton).

Comments: My family is from the Pineville/Alexandria area. I grew up going to Pineville/Alex on the w/e's. I have recently started looking up old family from the 1600's - 1957. My family name is Cobb/Bordelon. I am interested in finding old school pictures so I can see what my relatives looked like. If anyone knows where I can find this information, please contact me. I would greatly appreciate it! Thanks

Comments: I am a descendant of Pierre Baillio II, the original builder and owner of what is now called the Kent House. My daughter and I will be visiting the Kent House for the first time this month and I am really excited. For some reason, I am drawn to Alexandria at this time---I "found" your website by accident--it's wonderful! I feel such a connection to a place I have never been. It's as if I am being called back to my heritage. I look forward to viewing the Retrospective again.

Comments: Thanks. Sure enjoyed the photo tour. My dad was born in Alexandria in early 1920's. Left to the west coast via Navy WWII. I'm doing a little search and hoping to get some info from lost relatives in Alexandra area. That would be the offspring of Charlie and Fanni Ewing. My dad was Harry Ewing. I've got some leads. I think I'll succeed soon.

Comments: I was reared in Cheneyville, just south of Alex. We shopped in Alexandria, went to movies, ate at the old Baptist Hospital on occasion, attended special occasions at the Bentley. My husband and I are graduates of Louisiana College, so of course, we are all too familiar with Alexandria. The old Paramount theater, Schnack's, Wellan's, Weiss and Goldrings, the old Sears.

Such fond memories of the old Alex. My brother and his wife live there now so we have gradually seen things progress. New and fond memories are shaping in the new Alexandria.

City: Baton Rouge

Comments: I am really enjoying your Alexandria Retrospective. My age has not dimmed my memory of "Alec".

My first visit to Alexandria was in 1928 when my parents brought the family to a grass landing field west of Bayou Rapides. People could pay for a 15 minute flight over Alec. The passenger airplane was a Ford tri-motor. It made a terrible racket when the engines started up and the corrugated metal side panels really vibrated.

When I was very young my parents brought me to City Park to listen to Huey Long make a political speech. He was standing in a pavilion. He had on a white shirt and spoke very loudly. He kept raising his fist up and down.

Later, my family moved to Alexandia from a small town in Grant Parish called Rochelle. That was in 1936. We lived on Masonic Drive. The Masonic Home was about a mile down the highway from us. My first girl friend, Geraldine Smith, lived there.

I rode my bicycle up Masonic Drive to Bringhurst Park where the city zoo was located. I was ten years old and I saw my first live alligator there.

The Murray street bridge across the Red River to Pineville had a real steep incline on the Alexandria side. The bridge was real narrow and kind of scary.

I remember the brick streets and shopping at the Kress five and dime store. Every week end we would go the the Holsum bakery and buy frest hot doughnuts. It was like being in heaven. I saw my first neon sign at a Billups gas station on Lee street in 1939. Every saturday I would ride my bicycle up town the the "picture shows" on Third street. It cost a dime. That included a cartoon, news, previews of coming attractions, and the movie. Usually a Western.

I rode a school bus from Masonic Drive to Central Grammer School. My 4th grade teacher was Lucille S. Carnahan and my 5th grade teacher was Florence Segrist, who on pay days, would endorse her check and I would take it and the deposit slip to a teller at the Rapides Banks and Trust Co. On the way I always passed through the lobby of the Bentley Hotel and go through the "Mirror Room". It had mirrors all around the walls and on the ceiling. It was a soft blue room.

One of our neighbors on Masonic Drive was the Vanlangendonk family. One of their sons joined the CCC, (Civilian Conservation Corps), and helped plant pine tree seedlings on cut over land in Rapides Parish and the central Louisiana area. Alexandria made a lasting impression on me. These are just some of my memories.

Comments: What a great site! My family was stationed at England AFB from 1970 to 1973. I have a lot of great memories of the base as well as the city of Alexandria. I went to school for 3 years on base but I did attend A.J.H. in 72-73. My best memory of AJH was Coach Geroy. He was a great teacher and coach who I admired very much. The best memories I have of Alexandria involved sports. I played all the sports on base and my dad and I went to more Aces games than I can count. I can still see Bringhurst Field in my mind. I made the All Star team in little league two years in a row and I will never forget playing the Alexandria all star team. I'll never forget it because a guy named Eric Saucier pitched against us and he was unbelievable! I also played basketball on the base team and we played in the CYO league against St. Rita's and Alexandria Country Day. Those are the only two schools I can remember right now.

My older brother went to Country Day during that period. There was quite a bit of tension as I remember between the base and the city as far as school assignments for students from the base so a lot of kids went to Country Day. I also remember playing football for the base team and playing Prompt Succor in a scrimmage game. They had not been beaten in quite a while. I forget how many consecutive games they had won but needless to say their streak stayed intact when we played them.

We moved back to NC in the summer of 73 and I have lived here ever since but I have never forgotten England AFB or Alexandria. I would love to go back and visit some day. If anyone from my days there read this please contact me at DetTgrs68n84@aol.com. Thanks for putting together such a wonderful site!

Comments: Few would know me by my name. I was born Sadie Dianne Mahfouz, and reared in Alexandria until my family relocated to New Orleans. The passage of time has added a glamour to Alexandria that was lost on me as a child and teenager. I grew up in the cozy nest of Ivy League streets, and attended Cabrini and Providence. I am planning to take a walk back into the past this summer to visit the town I once couldn't wait to leave.

Comments: BOLTON HIGH - class of 1963 -- and a lifetime of memories in Alexandria! Cannot believe this site has been around a couple of years, and I have just found it! Read every word (including the registry) -- LOTS of names I remember. Ken -- you and I might have known each other at some point (grew up 2311 Alma; went to Prompt Succor -- wonderful Msgr. Olinger!!) You have done MASTERFUL work!

Just a few memories: dressing up to go downtown; first class to enter Alex.Jr.High; Owl Grocery (who still delivered to my grandmother as late as 1990); Fishville; Camp Windywood at Pollock; Channel 5 (when it was only on about 4 hours a day!); later house on Pershing Ave., with sugarcane field next door and cotton fields on Texas Ave.; all the food "haunts" everyone else has noted; Max Kees & The Rimshots playing for BHS Sock-Hops; although already noted by others, Mrs. Knobloch at OLPS and Mrs. Parker at BHS (MAJOR influences on my life!!); wonderful Mr. Pate at BHS; Mr.Doyle's first year on faculty at BHS -- every female student was in love with him!; roots so deep, they can never be touched by time or space.

Visited Alex just last year; of course, cannot help but notice the changes, but was so pleasantly surprised to see so much still intact. I am at least 6th generation Alex, so have much oral family history, as well as my own personal memories -- WHAT A TREAT! Anyone I might remember, please write at: 9231 Windy Crest Dr., Dallas, TX 75243. Have e-mail address, but "mail controls" in place (would be SOOO glad to add yours!). Thanks again for a most deliriously special experience (have old photos that I will send later). Anne

Comments: Fantastic sights on this site! I really liked finding the post card of Rock Garden, where in the years from 1954 until 1959 "we" engineered new water-ways, rearranged rocks/boulders, carved our names in sandstone, and dreamed we were in Tarzan's realm. The true trust and love of childhood friendships was nurtured by the magic of the garden. The LION'S FACE on the bridge had faded but his mystery was even greater...and the ghosts of persons who had loved our park before we came shepherded us through the days, and byways. I love Rock Garden! My greatest feat was to build a damn across the stream by learning how to use levers and move the boulders across the stream. I bet that made the park officials happy, a damn!

I saw magic and I saw grace, I saw love, and somehow a creative artist's eye was born in that milieu.

I would like to take a walk in rock garden with you all!

Then, it was off to Maryhill for three years, where many public works projects in the woods and streams needed my attention.

Jimmy Matessino, Sammy Nasello, Francis Brian, Hubert "Rebel" Yoist, Jimmy Vermaelen, and more brave explorers got their earliest experiences in the Rock Garden.

Thanks for the journey back!

Comments: My Dad and I have visited this site about whcih he has great interest as his birthplace is Forrest Hill, La.

My Dad was born in 1915 in Forrest Hill, La. the first child of six children to Charles Scott Francis & Charlsie Myrtis Bruce.

My father has recently recorded memoires of his life in La, during WWII and afterwards. He and my Mom (age 82)now live with me in Houston, Texas.

My father is 90 years old and has visited this website on Alexandria near where he grew up on Raoring Creek and Spring Creek. His uncle, Jim Bruce - his mother's brother - was the owner of Shady Nook on Sring Creek and was the police juryman of the parrish roads in Rapides Parrish Ward #4.

My grandfather, Charles Scott Francis, hired his two oxen to build gravel roads in Rapides Parrish at the turn of the century amd on into the early 1910's.

My mother also was from Louisana and her borther was Major General Oris B. Johnson who retired from the Air Force to be in public service in the Louisian State Government. Among many honors, he is recognized locally in the Museum for the USS Kidd in Baton Rouge.

Comments: I was a member of the 23rd Security Police Sqdn at England Air Force Base from March of 1976 until August 1979. I have fond memories of my time spent there, and some of the friends I made that still are close to me today. Swimming at Indian Creek, seeing the first Star Wars movie and many, many others at the Drive-In and "Dixie" being played everyday at noon in downtown Alex when the Confederate Flag flew high above a local business (a bank I think).

Muff McGinty Boyd

City: Georgetown
State: SC

Comments: Prompt Succor (1952 - 1961), Providence (1961-62), Bolton (1962-1965)

I long for contacts from Alex way out here in coastal South Carolina. My family (Dee McGinty Gilbert, Joe McGinty, Susan McGinty McNeal and my Mom, Fran McGinty) keeps me up on happenings but it just isn't like being there. I love reading all those names of people and places and seeing the pictures, but I have become disoriented about what was where after 36 years away. Could we have a street map added to the site?

One snapshot in time is from my early childhood and I am riding down Bolton Avenue with my daddy after dark, summer time. Bare bulbs illuminate fruit and vegetable stands along both sides of the street and throngs of people are there speaking a different language, Italian, I think. I was mesmerized watching them laughing and talking together. Must have been around 1950.

We have a wonderful heritage of people from so many "other places" in the world. I would love to hear from anyone from Alex, especially those living on the east coast. I had a wonderful reunion about 3 years ago with Glen Saucier from Brandon, Fla. and Michael Geiger from Fayetteville, NC in Charleston, SC where our families met and we saw each other for the first time in 30 something years!

My email address is marymboyd@yahoo.com.

Comments: My brother Richard, told me about this new site and this is wonderful...just last december i made a trip back to alex after about 5 years...it's funny how the smells (sandy loam soil, humidity, pine, oak) just hugged me, and the camellias were blooming too...what a welcome..there's so much on this site, i wish i could walk inside it and touch and feel and look around and lean against that cushion of softness alex always supplies...

schnacks was/is the best retail store ever...my godmother took me there when i was very young to pick out pretty things...that was in the late 1940s...i was, even then, amazed at the architecture..the frosted glass panels in the front display window etched with roses...all of it...i am so glad it's on the registry so it must be preserved, at least not changed,..i attended prompt succor from 1949 to 56 (i think) when i went on to bolton high where i graduated in 61......we were the last 8th grade class to attend bolton high....what is/has happened to the bentley hotel?

Comments: I would like to contact some old friends that I had when I lived at the Air Base in Alexandria from approximately 1969-1972. My friends were Anita and Velma Williams, whose father was a miltary policeman on the air base. My sister and I (Brenda & Sandra Rudd) moved to Florida in 1972 and we sure would like to contact our two lost friends. I do know that both Anita and Velma went into the air force after graduation and my sister Sandra saw Velma in Mexico Beach, Florida a few years later.

If anyone knows their whereabouts I sure would appreciate you contacting me via email, (bbrandon2652@earthlink.net) or by mail: 2652 Bristol Highway, Quincy, Florida 32351. I was told that Anita has remarried and now her last name may be Cooper. I visited Alexandria in 2003 and was so surprised at all of the changes. I was so glad that I got to visit the air base and was very surprised to still see my old duplex on Hickory Court was still standing. Got some nice pictures and was thrilled to see that the pool was still there. It sure did bring back memories.

City: Midwest City

Comments: Thank you for this most enjoyable site. I grew up in the area of Pineville and Alexandria in the mid-50s to mid-60s. We lived in what is now the state mental hospital grounds. My dad was stationed at England AFB. He also happens to be from Tioga. He is buried there. We moved to Shreveport after he retired. I miss Cenla and go back there as much as I can. Lots has changed there, which is probably a "good" thing.

I now live in Moore, Ok. I have lots of good memories growing up there. I attended Pineville Elem. We moved to Shreveport the summer before I entered the 7th grade. This was very hard for me. I knew one person at my school, that was my cousin. I had lots of friends in Pineville and it was hard to say goodbye. I had wonderful teachers at Pineville Elem. They would all be surprised to know that I am an Early childhood teacher at Rose State College in Okla.

I also found a site that has pics of Pineville Grammar year book around mid 50's. I recognize some of the children even though they where older than me. It was great to see pics of my old teachers and I mean old. Most all of them where near retirement. My favorite of all my teachers was Mrs Kees. However I also loved Mrs Katie Smith. They all made an great impression on me. If anyone has any pics they would like to share of their Pineville Grammar days from 1957-63 please summit them. We lived in the Forest Glen Housing Addition. We lived at 100C Rainbow Dr. It was a great place to live. Thanks for this site.

Thanks again

Comments: Hey, I found this site by accident and man, it was a great! read. I was born and raised in Alexandria in 1955 and left when I was twelve (1967); My father's name is Herbert Woodard and we lived in Pineville for a short time directly in front of the old cemetary; then we moved to Alexandria and lived on 1233 Shirland Avenue.

I went to Reed Street Elementary School and Jones Street Junior High School for one year (7th grade); thereafter, we moved to Los Angeles, California, where I continue to live. I visit Alexandria about every two to three years since the 90's. It would take to long to write about my appreciation of being reared in Alexandria/Pineville. I can only ditto everyone else sentiments. There are a few people I would love to contact; Janice Braxton, Zenobia Styles, Barbara Ann Christine and Lennard Gaston. These were some of my favorite elementary school freinds.
